Title: Hi10P FAQ (revision 1)
WTF is Hi10P?
In really basic terms, more data used to define colour which for some reason means we can get less banding (if you don’t know what that is, just know that it’s bad) for a smaller file size.
Awesome. How can I (as a leecher) take advantage of that?
- Grab the latest unstable VLC installer (the file ending in .exe) and install it. (No, you don’t already have this.)
- Play quality Hi10P anime with it.
- ???
- PROFIT!

Seriously though, you might consider using MPlayer2 instead.
You’ll probably struggle to use it without a GUI, such as SMPlayer.
You can also use the latest CCCP beta from official source or mirror.
How about Linux/Haiku/BSD/VMX/whatever?
If you can figure out how to be a hipster, you can figure out how to play a video.
It’s the same deal, get VLC or MPlayer2.
When I watch something, I occasionally see blocks or screwed up colour, but is otherwise completely fine.
You’re not using one of the above-mentioned software.
MPC, MPC-HC, ZoomPlayer, ffdshow, CoreAVC, CCCP, etc. all don’t work with Hi10P at the time of writing.
It’ll probably be ages, if ffdshow ever gets it. The latest CCCP beta (see above) now has a ffdshow build that supports 10 bit. At time of writing, the build available from ffdshow’s official website does not support it.
CoreAVC are “working” on it, so they will probably support it after the world has ended at about this time next year.
Why bother with all this crap when everything was working before?

I’m from a fagsub/rip/raw/whatever group and I want to use this awesome new format too. What do I do?
Assuming you already know how to encode, grab the relevant “10bit depth” build of x264.
If you use CRF, just increase it by about 2. If you use a specified bitrate, you can lower the bitrate a bit. (Note: The 2 was a completely arbitrary number and I have not done much testing. I think you may be able to increase it even more.)
Make sure you tag your release with “Hi10P”.
Something here is terribly wrong. How do I flame you/get you to fix it?

I honestly can’t understand why Hi10P support isn’t more widespread since it has been around since 2005.
Almost all 720p/1080p H264 videos nowadays are encoded in HiP (High Profile) which has a max bit-depth of 8, whereas Hi10P (High 10 Profile) bumps the max bit-depth up to 10. Earlier profiles such as Main Profile (MP) and Baseline Profile (BP) are becoming obsolete due to HD content becoming more and more widespread.
Sadly even the Blu-ray standard supports a maximum of only 8-bits. What were they thinking?!!

Yeah at the bitrates blu rays run at, it doesn’t really matter. Even the old blu rays that used MPEG-2 weren’t too terribad just because of raw bitrate.
Anyway, he says that ffmpeg et al probably won’t support it for a long while, but that may or may not be true. After all, a lot of stuff relies on libav, and they just updated recently.

If you’ll look at the bottom, they now support 9 and 10 bit decoding, as well as 4:4:4 support. So as more codecs/players integrate libav 0.7, the issue will vanish.
I’d bet ffdshow latest SVN is already using it, but as a rule I avoid using SVN releases for obvious reasons.

Last I tried VLC didn’t render subtitles properly. (Especially karaoke effects.) Has that changed?
And VLC is ear-crushingly loud at a volume of 5%. How do I fix that?
Also — does this ultimately improve image quality? Or does it just makes the filesize smaller for comparable quality?

I have only rarely experienced issues with subtitles in VLC (something like 0.1%). In fact, karaoke effects works better in VLC than my mpc-hc+CCCP install. (It could be a wrong setting though, but some subtitles don’t animate properly in my mpc-hc install.)
Other issues:
With some videos it would jerk and cause artifacts. A bit better in 1.2.0 though.
Ordered mkv chapters works, but it doesn’t load external files. However it screws up if the file tries to load external mkv files. (Turn ordered chapters off in settings to avoid this, as it otherwise makes the file unwatchable.)
There is a bug with chapters which causes the active chapter to be the last one instead of the first.
I have never experienced your audio issue though.
(I should really start to familiarize me with the VLC code so I can patch some of these bugs myself…)

It compresses the video better. In short, the encoder decides whether the quality should be higher, or if the filesize should be smaller.

I’m okay with this.
I didn’t watch it from start to finish, but I got at least 1 color error in MPC-HC from 0:05 to 0:14.
For debianfags just setup the debian-multimedia repository, then apt-get install mplayer2.
BTW what is being released in Hi10P? something besides baka to test?
Could you please explain in what way this gives any quality advantage at all. I understand the added value of 10bit color but when the TV broadcast is in 8bit and your monitor is in 8bit isn’t it just a waste to encode in 10bit? am I missing something? please explain.
I wonder myself, I thought one even needed 10 bit hardware LUT’s in IPS type that make them several hundreds of dollars more expensive than the average TFT LCD to be able to (fully) utilize 10 bit color signals. Even graphics cards outside the workstation grade Nvidias can only output 8 bits over DVI.
I suppose the extra 2 bits would be used inside the computer to give a marginal smoothing of the video… before color management? (color management is the reason expensive monitors have those LUTs – to prevent the banding that occurs by 8 bit managed software/graphics card managed LUTs that then truncate to 8 bit signals…)

Well, if the file sizes don’t increase dramatically (the above link looked reasonable), then it’s a marginal increase in quality (decrease in banding). Not as big an improvement as it could be if color management was understood and implemented (properly).
I’m not complaining, and my info may even be wrong/out of date. The above was the short story of what I learned when I bought my U2410… Pretend everything I said was all a dream?

I would guess that modern decoders/drivers utilize dithering when converting for display, so you get a result that is better than 8 bit depth, but perhaps not quite as good as if you had a monitor that had true 10 bit depth support.
Oh, in addition to software support (source, decoder, drivers), hardware support would include not only a graphics card capable of outputting 10-bit depth, and a monitor capable of actually displaying it (not just converting it to 8-bit like your U2410 does), but also the right type of cable.
Displayport supports something crazy like up to 16-bit depth. The newest HDMI standard supports 10-bit and maybe 12-bit, the older ones do not. I don’t know if DVI has the bandwidth for 10-bit. Maybe dual link DVI, but even if it does, I’m not sure if any graphics card/monitor combos support it.
H.264 relies heavily on being able to take parts of one frame and use them in the next frame. Instead of saying “this looks like an X” and then describing the X, it just says “this looks like this other X over here” and then describing any ways it’s different.
Because there’s less banding and other deficiencies caused by a limited color gamut, frames can be re-used in more ways, simultaneously improving the video quality and reducing filesize.
Then, when the video file is interpreted by your decoder, it reduces the color depth back to 8 bits per pixel. However, because it was 10 bits per pixel, it’s better looking.
No, it doesn’t mean you’ll actually see more colors on your monitor/TV, but again because the encode is more accurate, things like banding won’t appear as much in the decode.
If none of this made sense, you shouldn’t be asking smart-people questions.

Well, that’s nice. But there’s also the bleeding on colored edges. If you really want to reduce color bleeding you need 4:4:4 chroma sampling. Because chroma subsampling (4:2:0) causes – for example – red to bleed into the neighboring pixels on sharp edges.

How about this:
- TV releases don’t change at all. People get them because they just want to watch their animu as fast as possible, which is why speedsubs are popular. Being forced to get VLC only to watch a few minority of the releases would be a loss of time and disk space, as well.
- DVD/BR releases, which are often meant for archival and have huge filesizes, get the Hi10P treatment. People usually get those to masturbate to quality and they’re usually huge, so Hi10P would work wonderfully in this area.
- We continue being faggots as usual.

I’m fine with DVD and 480p – I think it’s a reasonable solution for quality/filesize. I’m even rescale 720p/1080p to 480p for my archives.
And I’m all for compatibility and don’t care about qulaity SO much. I’ve already drop all Chihiro releases because of they crap with compressed mkv streams (new (unsupported by most of the players) shit from mkvtoolnix) and multisegment mkv files which can’t be played as one file in old mplayer.
Why I’m using old build of mplayer? Because new ones working as shit and nothing changes.
It’s sad, that you’re fapping on quality for things where it’s not so important.

Two things. When you say increase the CRF by 2, do you mean use CRF 18 if you are already using CRF16, or use CRF 14? I really hope you don’t mean the latter, because coupled with the additional data required to store the 10 bit depth, files are gonna get bloated (as if they aren’t big enough already thanks to encoders who use shit settings).
The other thing is, I already notice banding in TS and Blurays, so I presume they are using 8 bit. Using gradfun2db on 8bit and encoding as 10 bit is akin to upscaling 720p to 1080p. Wouldn’t it just be better to use some finely tuned encoding settings and a generous crf?
I’m all for quality, but until we get native 10 bit sources, this seems like a silly idea. Sure it will look a bit better, but for low quality fansubs ripped from CBR TS streams, is there even a point? Save it for the BD rips at least.
Going from 18 to 20, 16 to 18, etc. when going from 8 bit to 10 bit.
In fact, you might even be able to increase it by 3. Still experimenting atm. What I gave was a rough estimate based on having made all of one 10 bit encode in my whole life.
I’ve yet to try 10 bit, and I’ve been holding off because support isn’t quite widespread yet (not to mention any potential device people may remux to play on).
I like your suggestion of using lower CRFs (would you call it lower or higher, cause a lower number means higher quality?)
That said, the extra data required to store the extra colour depth might offset the CRF drop when it comes to filesizes. Because of the better depth it might also mean that you can use these lower CRFs without banding. An interesting situation.
I’ll give this a go at some point.

Yeh.
They said they were still working on getting that part right, but at the moment it does at least *decode* 10 bit H264 properly.
Yes, I know that YV12 is 8bit 4:2:0. You should be looking at the input colorspace for what it’s actually getting in the shot (which is the actual “Fuck yeah, it works!” part).
The reasons for YV12 output from FFDShow-tryouts are:
A) YV12 is the default that FFDShow-tryouts gives out (this was during quick testing).
B) It is much easier to keep in “known” colorspaces for the time being in DirectShow. The MS 10bit YUV colorspace needs its own conversion (it’s only partially planar IIRC compared to the fully planar 10bit colorspace in libavcodec/libswscale), and needs support on the hardware and renderer side — thus making it a feat only usable by a (small) part of the userbase.
C) The -tryouts code is enough of a mess as it is, making it better to touch it as slightly as possible.
C) The 10bit->8bit conversion isn’t as bad as you think (as we’re not compressing it after that, and as we are in the same 4:2:0 YUV area), and actually a big part of 10bit-compatible players (namely mplayer(2) and VLC, which aren’t in any way related to the junky piece of code that we call our DirectShow playback environment) do it when playing back 10bit H.264 (although, since it’s not related to DirectShow, they have mostly implemented 10bit rendering as well for systems that can handle it).
TL;DR
As 10bit H.264′s biggest merits are in the compression capabilities (minimizing DCT related problems), the conversion to 8bit for output before rendering is not such a bad thing, as you usually get good’ish dithering in the conversion as well. Even if you don’t, it still looks good (the only way of testing back in the day was something a la encoding the 10bit input into 8bit ffvhuff or something).
Of course, that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be nice to have 10bit/16bit YUV output for the renderer, but it does mean that it’s not that vital for the end result to be 10bit to get what should be expected from 10bit H.264′s compression capabilities.
P.S.
Don’t ask about MPC-HC’s internal decoding support, that will come much later as they’ll get their libavcodec/libswscale updated, multithreading working, and as they’ll get rid of their patches (and from the ffdshow-tryouts’ patches that they have in their libav*).
I even feel that nevcairiel might finally get his decoding filter ready before that happens.

I’m so out of touch with the encoding scene, I don’t know who is working on what. Pretty much the last time I was actively subbing was just before (or slightly after) pengvado got hired by nero. I didn’t realise what state things were at, so I just wondered if someone had set YV12 not appreciating that the 12 doesn’t actually mean 12 bit (well it does, just not for any single plane).
Either way, it’s encouraging to see the progress. I wish I could say the same for the ALS losselss codec, but it seems the guys working on that have permanently stalled, and because FLAC is popular, there isn’t significant interest in the format.
I’ll probably pop back into darkhold one of these days and keep my ear to the ground. Thanks.
Has anyone verified that ZoomPlayer v8 RC2 doesn’t support this? Is there a video we can use to test it (and other players/codecs/etc) out? They’ve added to the H.264 format since April of this year.

FYI, I no longer build separate High-Bit-Depth versions of MPlayer2, since everything that made these different (FFmpeg instead of Libav, custom patches, etc.) has been merged.

@lachs0r you last build of mplayer2 make avira warns about “TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen3 [trojan]” i have mplayer.exe from kovensky mplayer 2 build and the vanilla mplayer build without any warning. Is the 10bit mode partialy culprit of this behaviour?
Bit of a late reply, but that’s just Avira being shit and giving false positives. I stopped reporting them after the 20th or so build since they just put them on the whitelist instead of fixing their worthless scanner. If you check that binary at virustotal.com, you’ll notice that AntiVir is the only AV which reports it as malware.
Usually AVs freak out on EXE packers, but I didn’t even use one. AntiVir just doesn’t like MinGW cross compiled stuff as it seems.
I’ll add a notice to the download page when I get home.

Open question to anybody; which of the players with self contained codecs would you suggest? The ‘self contained codecs’ bit is crucial here, so aside from anything which would mean I have to install codec packs, which player would you choose?
player with self contained codecs tend to suck so i dont use them i have MPC-HC + coreAVC only a couple of MB and it plays all

I see a lot more banding on MPC versus VLC, which is odd considering I’ve pretty much set it so that MPC runs purely on ffdshow (blocking any other external decoder) and yet it still doesn’t run as great as VLC does.

1. Hoshizora e Kakaru: Those still waiting for the last 3 episodes may have a long wait ahead. Commander’a, aka Ryuumaru chief, alienated his staff and left on a journey of self-discovery. Ryuumaru did some great stuff while it lasted, and may renew itself someday. For now, Doki-Chihiro has the completed series and has started BD releases as well. As is not always the case, this anime’s story ends strong and satisfying.
2. Hi 10P: Commander’a posted this string here but hasn’t contributed to the comments. If this string dies, those interested in an active discussion can head over to Commie and join their beta test discussion of CCCP with their Hi 10p Stein’s Gate ED.

On Linux, people should get smplayer, which uses MPlayer as engine. There is also VLC available for those who want it. Just fire up you package manager , type smplayer, click search, click install and done.
* if it needs more performance that’s a big minus. I’m getting trouble with full HD on a ’07 machine already : S
* as long as standard players / codec packs don’t widely support it, that’s also a minus (if it’s the future that’ll probably be no problem soon)
* filesize doesn’t matter to many people. In times of 16+ MBit standard connections bandwith is usually not a problem. And 1-2TB HDs aren’t very expensive.

Opensuse Linux with packman repo and Ubuntu with PPA repo, have the latest working versions of MPlayer,VLC, etc. I mainly use SMPlayer front-end for MPlayer, and never had a problem.
On my main box with Opensuse 11.4, all the hi10p samples work great. The Dantalian hi10p m.3.3.w version given at the start of this thread looks great.
Only “drawback”, is that uses uses 10~20% more CPU than plain conventional 8 bit h264 on high density-fast moving animation, like the beginning of Dantalian, but weights nearly half the size of the Commie version. That being 30~40% CPU on 8-bit h264 and 40~60% on 10bit h264 on a single core on a 2 year old PhenomII X4 810.
I would love to see the Kore wa Zombie BDs released as hi10p.
Size has grown uncontrollably in recent years, but the king is still Thora. jajja
I found this on the WD forum … “none of the current Sigma chips support anything beyond HP@L4.1… Decoding Level 5 and above and Hi10 and any higher profiles are not supported…”
You can encode in Hi10P if you like.

My HPTC is an Atom330+Nvidia Ion running XBMC in Win7.
Obviously the Atom is rubbish and I need hardware acceleration to play H.264 1080p.
Will this setup be able to play 1080p Hi10 ?
Or is DXVA limited to 8-bit?

On Linux (Debian testing) Hi10p works flawless played with mplayer (svn checkout); CPU usage just 15-20% more than usual: ca. 40-60% of a single core (AthlonII, clocked down to 800MHz by conservative governor) without any hardware acceleration (^_^)
I believe there is a great PotPlayer build with madvr + lavfilters that supports hi10p.

What front end encoder do you use with hi10 P or whatever its called. I’m still using vfw264 and Virtualdub. Is the front end program capable of multi core encoding, Virtualdub is stuck on one core.

Actual BDS are of approximately 7 gigs for an episode, and 19 gigs for a movie. Saying that, they do not make releases of BD larger than the size of a BD.
